ABOUT US
Army competitive shooters, gunsmiths, and support personnel assigned to the US Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) have been have been responsible for winning hundreds of individual and team National Championship titles, more than 40 World Championships, and 20 Olympic medals. Such accomplishments are why the US Army Marksmanship Unit is called the "Home of Champions."
Unfortunately, when an individual left the Unit through military assignment or retirement, they soon lost contact with those who shared their competitive marksmanship interest.
The idea of an Army Marksmanship Unit association was not new. Many former members of AMU had voiced this wish to anyone who would lend an ear.
It was not until Colonel Lory M. "Mac" Johnson (former USAMU Commander and past Association President) gave his full support to establishing such an association that the idea was realized.
Much of the liaison between the Infantry Center at Fort Benning and the fledgling association was coordinated by the USAMU Executive Officer, Mr. Robert W. Aylward.
The Association's initial meeting was March 8, 1994. Approval was granted by the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Infantry Center for the Association to operate as a private organization on Fort Benning. Georgia.
The Military Marksmanship Association was
initially established in 1994 as the Army Marksmanship Unit Association (AMUA). Our constitution lists the objectives of the MMA, which are to support the goals and objectives of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), provide a link to the history of the USAMU, and to conduct membership meetings, membership reunions, and ceremonial events.
The State of Georgia incorporated the MMA on October 19, 2001, as a Domestic Nonprofit Corporation. On March 23, 2004, the Internal Revenue Service recognized the association as a tax exempt Veteran's Organization under IRC section 501(c)(19).
The Military Marksmanship Association qualifies as a Veterans' Organization under Internal Revenue Service Code section 501(c)(19); therefore, the percent of members in each of the following categories must be maintained to meet the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code: (1) past or present veterans, (2) cadets (ROTC or armed services academies), spouses, widows or widowers of a veteran or cadet, and (3) general public members.
Past or present members of the U.S. Armed Forces must provide their branch of military service and the dates of their military service (Active, Reserve and Guard) and other applicants must check mark the appropriate block on the Membership Application Form
so the MMA can determine the percentages.
Donations to the MMA and our IRS Status:
On March 23, 2004, the Internal Revenue Service recognized the association as a tax exempt Veteran's Organization under IRC section 501(c)(19). However, donations to the Military Marksmanship Association are
not tax deductible to the donor under Internal Revenue Service Code section 170(c)(3)
at this time.
In order for donations to be deductible as charitable contributions on the donor’s federal income tax return, the MMA would need to meet the requirements of a war veterans’ organization. The criteria for that status is to have 90% of our membership be war veterans as defined by the IRS. The MMA Executive Board continues to monitor our membership status and percent of war veterans that we have and if there is a change to that status, we will let the membership know.
