Roger H. Willis

MSG (Retired) Roger H. Willis, 71, died on June 7, 2008 in Columbus, Georgia.

Roger enlisted in 1959 and received his basic training at Fort Ord, California, and advanced training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, before being assigned to Europe.

Roger’s competitive shooting career began in 1962 when he was selected as a member of the U.S. Army Europe Pistol Team and shot in the All-Army Matches. In 1965, he won the 2nd U.S. Army Pistol Championship.

Roger was assigned in 1967 to USARV Flight Detachment RVN then later to 183rd Aviation Company (Sea Horse) in Vietnam. He returned to CONUS in 1970.

He was assigned to U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in 1971. His major shooting accomplishments include winning the National Pistol Championship in 1983, winning the National Indoor Pistol Championship in 1986, and firing a 2675x156 to become a member of the elite 2670 Club in 1987.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Air Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was awarded the U.S. Army Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1965 and the President's Hundred Tab in 1979.

Roger retired in 1989 from the Army and was employed by Wells Fargo Security. He continued shooting and shot Police Combat becoming a member 1480 Club and Georgia Governor’s 20. He was also a member of the Springfield Armory Civilian Pistol Team.

Roger will be remembered as a person who was always willing and ready to help another person.
