Taps, Present Arms

Elmer D. Mondon

Sergeant First Class (Retired) Elmer D. Mondon, 62, died in Columbus, Georgia, on Monday, July 15, 2002. SFC Mondon was a former USAMU Service Rifle shooter.

SFC Elmer D. Mondon joined the Army from Virginia, Illinois. He later served two years in Vietnam and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge along with other decorations.

"Elmer D." as his teammates would address him, began his marksmanship career in the mid 1960's working his way up to the "All-Army" level by shooting with several Army Area Marksmanship Training Units (MTU) including Third Army and USAREUR.

Following short assignments with these MTUs and the Service Rifle National Trophy Group, he was assigned to the United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) at Fort Benning, Georgia.

SFC Mondon, was known for his Long Range and Rapid Fire team shooting ability. During his shooting career with USAMU, he was a member of numerous winning and record setting Army Service Rifle Teams.

SFC Mondon added much to team moral with his humor, singing,  and guitar playing. He believed in the team concept and always did his best to instill pride in those who served at the "Home of Champions."
