Marvin D. Black

Sergeant First Class (Retired) Marvin D. Black, 68, Service Pistol Shooter,  died November 21, 2009 in Columbus, Georgia.

Marvin was a two-tour Vietnam War veteran and his awards include the Bronze Star Medal. In 1961, while serving in the 3rd U. S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), he had the privilege of marching in President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Parade.

Marvin was assigned to the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit Service Pistol Team and was a member of the Army Blue Team. He shot both NRA 3-Gun competitions and International pistol disciplines.

He was awarded the U. S. Army Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1962, the President's Hundred Tab in 1973, and the United States Distinguished International Shooter Badge in 1974.

Marvin was the Center Fire Pistol gold medal winner at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City and was a member of the Standard Pistol bronze medal team at the 1974 World Championships in Thun, Switzerland.

In national pistol competition, he set many records during his assignment with USAMU. In 1973, he won the Center Fire National Match Course at the National Matches, Camp Perry, Ohio, with a record score of 300-20x — a record that still stands.

Marvin was very proud to have been able to call himself a soldier, a veteran, and above all else, an American.
