Byron T. Akers

Sergeant Major (Retired) Byron T. Akers, 80, died November 9, 2008, in Columbus, Georgia.

SGM Akers was a member of the USAMU Shotgun Team where he participated in National and International Skeet tournaments and trained Olympic medal winners.

Akers was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in Vietnam, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm. He retired as Sergeant Major with 30 years of military service.

After retiring from the Army, he served as manager of the Wolf Creek Gun Club in Atlanta, Georgia, then worked at the Medical Center Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, for 15 years as a Respiratory Therapist. He was a member of the Military Marksmanship Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and the National Rifle Association.
