Sergeant Walton G. Eller III, a shotgun shooter with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Shotgun Team, has been selected as the Military Marksmanship Association Soldier of the Year for 2008.

MMA president, retired Colonel Robert I. Hoidahl, Jr., made the announcement at the January 2009 MMA Annual Membership Meeting held at the Pool International Shooting Complex. Colonel Hoidahl presented the Soldier of the Year Award to Eller – a caliber.45 pistol donated by the Smith & Wesson Corporation.

A special thanks to Smith & Wesson Corporation for their continued support of the MMA Soldier of the Year by their generous donation of the trophy pistol.


Eller started shooting in 1990 at the age of eight. He was raised in Katy, Texas, and graduated from James E. Taylor High School in 2000. He continued his education at the University of Auburn in Alabama and the University of Houston in Texas before enlisting in the Army in 2006  After completing Basic Training and Infantry Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Eller was assigned to the Army Marksmanship Unit in January 2007.

SGT Eller has been awarded the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the United States International Distinguished Shooter Badge.
