USAMU Hall Of Fame SOP Information

USAMU Crest

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) Commander signed a newly revised Hall of Fame Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). He requested that the MMA post the SOP to the MMA web site in order to explain the selection process.

The selection and induction of persons into the USAMU Hall of Fame, the Section Halls of Fame, and the Support Hall of Fame is controlled by the USAMU and not the MMA. The MMA has volunteered to perform administrative functions listed in the "Responsibilities" Inclosure of the SOP.

This SOP outlines the criteria for being nominated and inducted into one of the section Halls of Fame — International Rifle, International Pistol, Shotgun, Action Shooting, Service Rifle,  and Service Pistol — the Support Section Hall of Fame, and the Unit Hall of Fame.

There has been some confusion on how and who can be inducted into these halls. While no Hall of Fame Program can cover all possible scenarios, this SOP does allow for all individuals that have served their country and the USAMU in a truly exemplary manner to be considered. A short summary of the program follows:

The present Hall of Fame concept originated in 1988. There is a Hall of Fame for each shooting-section, a Support Hall of Fame, and the main Unit Hall of Fame.

Shooting Section Halls of Fame:  For the most part individuals earn points and once they earn 50 points are inducted.  If someone does not earn the required points, there is a provision where they can be considered using the "At Large" criteria. The At Large criteria are very simple:  Provide a photo and bio of the person you choose to nominate. Those documents will be sent out to the individuals currently enshrined in that particular section Hall of Fame for a vote. Please see the "At Large" section of the SOP for specifics.

Support Section Hall of Fame:  This is essentially the same process as the At Large procedure of the Shooting Section Halls. Submit a photo and bio of the person to be considered. Please see the Support Section portion of the SOP for specifics.

The Unit Hall of Fame:  While the process for the Section Halls is essentially objective, induction to the Unit Hall is subjective. There are no specific criteria, it is a vote by MMA members. All individuals that are in a Shooting or Support HOF and have been retired from their primary competitive sport for five years are considered.

The induction ceremonies have traditionally been conducted at major events, such as reunions, thus ensuring the majority of individuals can attend and be recognized.

Please review the Hall of Fame program and when you receive your next HOF ballot, please vote and return your ballot.
