Historian's Report - 2000

1. Compilation of photographs for the USAMU photo archives. A caption was added to each donated photo if the people, place, event, and date were known. A list of photos can be found in paragraph four. Photos are placed in document protectors and two-inch binders. Photo binders are stored in the unit library.

2. Our inventory of the American Rifleman increased by several issues last year thanks to Aubrey Smith of Locust Grove, GA. Aubrey donated issues from the years 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931 and the complete year of 1952 which had been missing. Glenn Frazier of Grass Valley sent several copies that replaced older or shabbier magazines.

3. The MMA Times editor is usually looking for filler information. I have been compiling the Keeping in Touch, A Little Humor, Shooting Experiences columns and a Thank You notes area for contributing donors, which I send to the MMA Times Editor. I'll continue to work on the life story of Coats Brown.

4. Photo identification efforts continue. The following people have spent time and effort putting a name to a face on several archive photos: Aubrey Smith of Locus Grove, GA; Loyd Crow of Columbus, GA; Willis Powell of Columbus, GA; John D. Loomis of Salinas, California; Mike Machuca of San Antonio, TX; Kenner Ravencraft, Frank Lum Lung, and their cohorts at the 19th Puka, PH Golf Course.

5. The most material ever donated at one time was handed over at the last reunion, October 2000. Thanks everyone!

Emil Heugatter of Waco, Texas donated photos, bulletins, Army correspondence, official orders, memorabilia and a newspaper article written by Lee LaComb and featuring Emil and other Army wins at the Southeastern Regional in the 1960's. There were 21 NRA National Individual and Team Pistol Records. There were 3 bulletins-a 1966 National Midwinter (Tampa) Pistol Match Bulletin won by Emil, a October 1977 CISM (18th) Championship Bulletin and a July 1978 NGMTU Tennessee Trophy Pistol Match Bulletin. The eight 8"x10" and eight smaller photos depict conventional and international teams and award ceremonies. There were letters of Army course completion. There were Special Orders awarding MOS 11B4H and 11F5HT2 and the Presidents Hundred Tab for Pistol. A General Order awarded an ARCOM for sniping operations in Vietnam. A June 1957 letter awarded Emil the Excellence in Competition Badge. There were 6 Letters of Commendation for Individual and Team Pistol successes. The memorabilia included a USAMU crest string tie, 4 US Army Shooting Team decals, a USAMU combination keychain and tape measure. There were USAMU and USAREUR cufflinks and USA Armed Forces Athlete luggage tag. There was an International Shooting Team tie clasp and tie pin and a US Army Shooting Team tie pin. Most impressive was the metallic thread embroidered USA International Shooting Team pocket patch. Army shooters names listed on any of these documents will be added to our MMA lists.

Doug Duncan of Columbus, Georgia donated three items of memorabilia. An attractive brass belt buckle with a unit crest centered and bold lettering surrounding the crest stating "United States Army Championships". A combination key ring and measuring tape with the unit crest on one side and bold lettering on the opposite side stating "USAMU, Fort Benning, GA 31905." A blazer pocket patch with silver and gold thread and the words "United States Army Shooting Team" embroidered in place. This pocket patch is still in the original package sold by Vanguard Military Equipment Corporation. A penciled annotation states March 1963 on the back.
